Breaking news! UConn is on the verge of securing Jason Candle, currently the head coach at Toledo, to lead their football program. Sources indicate that the deal is nearing completion, and it's expected to significantly boost Candle's current salary. A team meeting has already been scheduled for Saturday morning in Toledo, signaling the imminent transition.
Candle's track record speaks volumes. During his tenure at Toledo, he's overseen 11 NFL Draft picks, a figure unmatched by any other coach in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) during that period. His overall record with the Rockets stands at an impressive 81-44 across 10 seasons, highlighted by two conference titles. This move comes as UConn seeks a new leader following Jim Mora Jr.'s departure for Colorado State earlier this week.
But here's where it gets interesting: Candle was also a contender for the head coaching position at Tulane. Despite the interest from other programs, the Ohio native has remained loyal to Toledo. Now, he's taking on a new challenge at UConn, an independent program. UConn is one of only two remaining FBS independents, along with Notre Dame.
Candle's journey to the top began when he was promoted to head coach after Matt Campbell left Toledo for Iowa State. He's made three MAC title appearances and has consistently delivered winning seasons, with only one season ending at .500. The Rockets finished the 2025 regular season with an 8-4 record, narrowly missing a MAC title game berth due to a tiebreaker. A highlight of his tenure was the Rockets' stunning 41-17 victory over Mississippi State in Starkville in 2024.
Candle is the program’s all-time wins leader. Toledo’s 79 wins since 2016 are the most of any school in the MAC.
UConn is coming off back-to-back nine-win seasons. The Huskies’ last nine-win season came in 2007. The program has also gone to three bowls in four years. UConn had been to only one bowl game in the previous 11 years.
