The Tinubu Government's Bold Move: Scrapping HND, Empowering Polytechnics
In a groundbreaking announcement, President Bola Tinubu's administration has unveiled a transformative policy that challenges the status quo. The government aims to revolutionize the education landscape by scrapping the Higher National Diploma (HND) and empowering polytechnics to award degrees, marking a significant shift in the nation's approach to technical education.
This bold initiative, as revealed by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, addresses the long-standing issue of discrimination against polytechnic graduates. Alausa emphasized that the policy will elevate polytechnics to centers of excellence, no longer viewed as inferior to universities but as essential contributors to national development.
The core objective is to prepare a skilled workforce capable of tackling real-world challenges. Alausa highlighted the importance of a technical education system that fosters innovation and problem-solving, ensuring Nigeria's future success.
To ensure quality, the government will implement strict regulations and quality assurance measures. This includes a special intervention from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to modernize engineering schools within polytechnics.
However, the minister also addressed concerns about corruption, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and zero tolerance for financial misconduct in polytechnic administration. This comprehensive approach aims to create a fair and efficient educational system.
The announcement comes as a response to the National Board for Technical Education's (NBTE) advocacy for the Higher National Diploma Discrimination (Prohibition) Bill. This move not only addresses the needs of stakeholders but also paves the way for a more inclusive and progressive technical education system in Nigeria.
