Get ready for a thrilling journey into the world of cinema! The 'Queen of Malacca' cast has been unveiled, and it's an epic reveal!
At the JAFF Market, a buzz-worthy event, Indonesian filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko brought his highly anticipated action-fantasy film to life. This project, 'Queen of Malacca', is a true labor of love, and Sasongko didn't hold back in sharing its creative journey and an incredible cast lineup.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a departure from the norm. Sasongko is creating a fantasy world inspired by Southeast Asia, with its own unique mythology, languages, and cultural nuances. He boldly states, "It's not a period film; it's modern, contemporary." Imagine a world where Indonesian beliefs, philosophy, and even writing systems come together to create a magical realm.
And this is the part most people miss: the action choreography. Sasongko is blending silat, an iconic Indonesian martial art, with influences from Hong Kong action cinema. To achieve this fusion, he's teamed up Reza Hilman, a rising Indonesian choreographer, with Chan Man Ching, a veteran Hong Kong stunt coordinator. Chan, with his extensive experience, is ready to create a fresh, new style for the film.
The cast, including Claresta Taufan, Faris Fadjar, and Dion Wiyoko, spoke about the physical demands of the project. Jihane Almira shared how the role allowed her to break free from her elegant public image, while Dion Wiyoko, returning to action after 16 years, emphasized the daily challenges and the need for intense focus.
Sasongko ensured that each performer's action design was tailored to their unique physical abilities. "Man Ching and Reza assessed every actor's movement," he said. "Audiences will witness the best of each character's potential."
To top it off, Sasongko screened a 'test reveal', a sneak peek at the film's visual style. He left the audience wanting more, teasing, "If this is just 20%, imagine the full film!"
With Sasongko at the helm, 'Queen of Malacca' promises to be a groundbreaking genre film. Produced by Visinema, this project showcases Sasongko's ambition and creativity. Principal photography begins on December 3, and we can't wait to see more!
