Newcastle's Defensive Woes: Livramento's Injury Puts Howe's Team in a Bind
Head coach Eddie Howe is facing a challenging situation as Newcastle United's defensive options dwindle. The recent setback came with Tino Livramento's hamstring injury, ruling him out for up to two months. This comes as a blow, especially since Livramento had just returned from a knee injury earlier this month. Howe expressed his disappointment, highlighting Livramento's hard work to recover.
With three England caps under his belt, Livramento's absence is a significant loss. The 23-year-old's fitness is now in a race against time, as he aims to prove himself before the March internationals against Japan and Uruguay. Following the team's 2-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City, Howe admitted, 'Defensively, we're really stretched.' Burn's injury, a broken rib and punctured lung, occurred during the derby defeat against Sunderland, yet he might return before the end of the month.
Howe also considers recalling left-back Matt Targett, who is on loan at Middlesbrough, with two-and-a-half weeks left in the transfer window. Newcastle has the financial means to make moves, but mid-season transfers impact their summer plans, when better options and more value might be available.
Howe questions the availability of the 'right player' in the mid-season window. His current defensive options include Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall, Kieran Trippier, and midfielder Lewis Miley, who has been filling in at right-back.
