A heartwarming story of legacy and community support is unfolding in Manchester, where a professional boxer is stepping up to ensure the survival of a beloved boxing gym. The grandson of a Manchester boxing legend is running in his grandad's footsteps, quite literally, to raise funds for the gym that bears his name.
Dale Arrowsmith, 31, will be participating in the Manchester Marathon this April, representing Roy Richardson's Academy in Stockport. The gym, a non-profit organization, relies on the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of its members to keep its doors open. With rising costs and a need for new equipment, Dale is taking action to keep the legacy of his grandfather alive.
"We do it for the love of helping the kids," Dale explained. "The gym survives on the £3 per session that members contribute, along with fundraising efforts. It's a challenging situation, especially with the skyrocketing costs of equipment and the overall cost of living.
Dale's grandad, Roy Richardson, was a boxing legend in his own right. Born in Ancoats in 1933, Roy discovered his passion for boxing in the 1950s, fighting in carnival booths for money. He later joined the Royal Engineers and, after his service, married his wife Pat. The couple moved to New Zealand, where Roy began training young fighters. Upon their return to the UK, Roy started training at the Bredbury Steelworks gym in Stockport, which was later renamed the Roy Richardson Boxing Academy in his honor.
Roy passed away in 2021 at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy and a gym in need. Dale has taken on the responsibility of keeping the academy running, and his participation in the marathon is a testament to his dedication. "My grandad ran the Manchester Marathon when he was 50, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and raise funds for the club," Dale said.
But here's where it gets controversial: Should the responsibility of keeping community spaces like this alive fall solely on the shoulders of volunteers and members? And this is the part most people miss: The impact of rising costs on non-profit organizations, especially those dedicated to youth development. It's a delicate balance, and it raises important questions about the role of community support and the sustainability of such initiatives.
