Major Train Changes in January: Swindon, Didcot, Chippenham Affected - What You Need to Know (2026)

Major disruptions to rail services in Swindon, Didcot, and Chippenham: Essential upgrades and alternative routes

Network Rail is set to undertake significant enhancements to the overhead power lines and tracks between Didcot in South Oxfordshire and Swindon in Wiltshire, causing substantial changes to rail services in January. This will impact trains traveling between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads or Swansea, forcing them to take an alternative route via Westbury and bypassing Didcot Parkway, Swindon, and Chippenham. Shuttle services and replacement buses will be provided to compensate for these changes.

Sam Bowen from Network Rail emphasized the benefits of these upgrades, stating, 'The enhancements to the tracks and overhead lines will significantly improve reliability and performance. We appreciate your patience during these improvements.'

The disruptions are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Friday 2 and Saturday 3 January
  • Weekends of 10-11, 17-18, and 24-25 January
  • Morning of Sunday 4 January (services to/from London Paddington until before midday)

On Friday 2 January, long-distance trains between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads or Swansea will not stop at Didcot Parkway, Swindon, or Chippenham. Shuttle train services will still operate between London Paddington and Didcot Parkway, as well as Swindon and Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Temple Meads, or Westbury. Replacement buses will be available between Swindon and Didcot Parkway or Reading.

On Saturday 3 January and the subsequent weekends of 10/11, 17/18, and 24/25 January, long-distance trains will follow the same schedule as on Friday 2 January. However, trains will continue to run between London Paddington and Didcot Parkway, Swindon, and Cheltenham Spa, as well as Chippenham and Bristol Temple Meads or Westbury. Replacement buses will be operational between Swindon and Didcot Parkway or Reading, and between Swindon and Bristol Parkway or Chippenham.

Additionally, valid rail tickets can be used for travel on local buses in Bath and Wiltshire.

On Sunday 4 January (until before midday), most GWR trains will commence or terminate at Reading instead of London Paddington. Some GWR and Elizabeth Line trains will operate between Reading and Maidenhead, while the Elizabeth Line will also run between Hayes & Harlington and London Paddington. Buses will replace trains between Maidenhead, Slough, and Hayes & Harlington. Trains between Slough and Windsor & Eton Central will remain unaffected.

Marcus Deegan, the GWR station manager for Swindon and Bristol Parkway, acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the engineering work, stating, 'We understand that such work can be frustrating, but these investments are crucial for maintaining reliable services in the long term. Trains will take alternative routes, potentially resulting in longer journey times, or buses will operate where we cannot run trains. We are committed to keeping you moving, but please verify your journey before departure.'
