Lester Martinez vs. Immanuwel Aleem: WBC Interim Title Fight Preview (2026)

Lester Martinez-Immanuwel Aleem interim title fight sanctioned by WBC: A New Chapter for Guatemala's Rising Star

The WBC has sanctioned a highly anticipated interim super middleweight title fight between Lester Martinez and Immanuwel Aleem, marking a significant moment in the world of boxing.

But here's where it gets controversial... The fight, set to take place on March 21 in San Bernardino, California, is not just about the belt. It's about a young man from Guatemala who dreams of becoming the country's first world champion. Lester Martinez, with his 19-0-1 record and 16 knockouts, is on a mission to make history.

'As president of the WBC, I am thrilled to know such an amazing young man as Lester,' said Mauricio Sulaiman. 'We are committed to supporting boxing and its development, worldwide.'

Lester, 30, has been on a roll since his entertaining September draw against new WBC full titleholder Christian Mbilli. The WBC has elevated Mbilli to full titlist, and the plan is for him to defend his title against four-division champion Alvarez in September in Saudi Arabia. But for now, Lester is focused on his upcoming bout.

'I really thought I won the fight on September 13, and it’s been frustrating to not get a rematch with Mbilli,' Lester said. 'I very much appreciate Mauricio and the WBC Board of Governors for giving me this opportunity. It’s been my dream to be the first Guatemalan champion ever. I can’t wait for March 21.'

The fight will take place at the Orange Show Events Center, where Lester previously knocked out Joeshon James in the fourth round in March. With the retirement of Terence Crawford, who held the five-division and undisputed super middleweight champion title, Lester is now in the spotlight, and the boxing world is taking notice.

'I want to beat a truly great boxer and I want to be a world champion. … Of course, I’m interested in both,' Lester said when asked about his preference for an opponent, Alvarez or Mbilli, for the full belt. 'We’re at that level, and I know my next fight will be for a world title.'

But here's the twist... While the fight is sanctioned by the WBC, it's ProBoxTV that will stage the event. And this is the part most people miss... ProBox founder and Martinez promoter Garry Jonas has set the stage for a potential future world title opportunity for Lester, ensuring he maintains an active schedule of fights every six months. With Aleem, who has a 22-3-3 record and 14 knockouts, available, the stage is set for a thrilling interim title fight.

So, will Lester Martinez make history and become Guatemala's first world champion? Will he face Alvarez or Mbilli for the full belt? The boxing world is watching, and the comments section is open for your thoughts. What do you think? Agree or disagree, your voice matters!
