JSK Seals Playoffs Spot with Bonus-Point Victory over PR
In a thrilling display of batting prowess, Joburg Super Kings (JSK) secured their place in the SA20 playoffs with a commanding 45-run bonus-point win over Paarl Royals (PR) in the final league match at Boland Park. This victory not only solidified JSK's fourth-place finish but also eliminated Durban's Super Giants from contention.
The stage is now set for an intriguing playoff rematch between these two teams in the Eliminator. Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who topped the table, will face off against Pretoria Capitals in Qualifier 1.
JSK elected to bat first on a slow pitch, and their strategy paid off. They recovered from a steady start, reaching 166 for 5. The key to their success was Leus du Plooy's late surge, as he smashed an unbeaten 54 off 27 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes. The final two overs yielded a remarkable 34 runs, swinging the momentum decisively in JSK's favor.
Earlier in the innings, Neil Timmers and Michael Pepper provided a solid foundation after the early dismissal of captain James Vince for a duck. Timmers contributed 39 runs, while Pepper added 27. However, the middle overs lacked urgency until du Plooy's explosive performance against Waqar Salamkheil in the 19th over, where he hit two sixes and a boundary. Dian Forrester sealed the deal with another six in the final over, propelling the score to a decisive 166.
Paarl Royals, on the other hand, faced challenges from the start. Captain David Miller's absence due to injury put pressure on the team as wickets fell regularly in the middle overs. Prenelan Subrayen and Imran Tahir capitalized on the conditions, combining to take five wickets for just 31 runs. Lhuan-dre Pretorius showed intent with 32 runs, and Dan Lawrence tried to keep the chase alive with a brisk 45 off 29 balls. However, Tahir's precision and Subrayen's tight bowling proved too much for the Royals, as they lost seven wickets for 41 runs, eventually being bowled out for 122.
The final scores were: Joburg Super Kings 166/5 (Leus du Plooy 54*, Neil Timmers 37) and Paarl Royals 122 all out (Dan Lawrence 45; Prenelan Subrayen 3-14, Imran Tahir 2-17), with JSK winning by 45 runs.
