On the evening of March 3rd, as the sun sets and the air cools, a total lunar eclipse will transform the familiar silver moon into a glowing copper-crimson orb, visible across Australia. This phenomenon, where the moon takes on a reddish hue, is a result of the Earth's atmosphere bending sunlight and casting a long shadow into space. The moon will appear to change color, from a soft orange to a deep crimson, as it passes through the Earth's shadow, creating a breathtaking sight for skywatchers. The Mid North Coast Astronomy group, led by astronomer Dave Reneke, will be hosting a free public viewing at Rocks Ferry Reserve in Wauchope, providing an ideal opportunity for Hastings residents to witness this natural wonder. The eclipse will begin in New South Wales at 8:50 pm, with a dark curve appearing on one edge of the moon, and will reach its peak at 10:33 pm, when the moon will glow with its richest color. The event will conclude by 11 pm. This phenomenon has captivated ancient cultures, who often saw it as a sign of change or a powerful relationship between Earth and sky. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sky traditions, for example, link the moon to life cycles and the meeting of the Sun and Moon, a moment of meaning and respect.
