Focused Energy, a German-based startup, has raised a substantial $240 million Series A funding round, making it one of the most heavily funded fusion startups. This significant investment brings their total private capital to $300 million, with an additional $200 million in grants, showcasing the industry's confidence in their laser-powered fusion technology. The startup's approach involves using lasers to compress fusion fuel through inertial confinement, a method inspired by the National Ignition Facility (NIF) experiment. This experiment, conducted at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was the first to achieve a controlled nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than it consumed.
One of the key challenges Focused Energy aims to address is the complexity of the NIF's fuel target, which is difficult to manufacture and limits the facility's firing rate to around 400 shots per year. In contrast, Focused Energy's reactor will need to achieve 10 shots per second, or approximately 864,000 shots daily. To simplify the process, they are eliminating the hohlraum, a precision-manufactured gold cylinder used at the NIF to convert laser energy into X-rays for fuel compression. Instead, their 'direct drive' laser system directly compresses the fuel pellet, potentially increasing efficiency and power generation.
The company plans to build its first demonstration system, named Lighthouse, at a decommissioned nuclear fission power plant in Germany, previously operated by the utility RWE. RWE is the main investor in the Series A round, joined by the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND), Prime Movers Lab, and the European Innovation Council Fund. This funding surge comes amidst a growing interest in the fusion industry, with other startups like Thea Energy, Inertia Enterprises, and Type One Energy also attracting substantial investments.
