Get ready for some serious racing action, folks! Lando Norris, the McLaren driver, is predicting a whole new level of chaos on the F1 tracks due to recent rule changes.
The introduction of the 'boost button', which provides an extra boost of electrical energy, is a game-changer. Norris believes this feature, combined with the impact on the battery's charge, will revolutionize F1 racing.
"You'll see drivers forcing their way into different positions, creating exciting racing moments that we've never witnessed before. It's a positive change, no doubt about it," he said.
Norris's insights are based on the recent 'shakedown' test in Barcelona, with further pre-season tests scheduled in Bahrain. He predicts that the new engine dynamics and energy management will result in more frequent position swaps among drivers.
"Get ready for some intense yo-yoing and strategic moves. Drivers will have to defend their positions more aggressively, creating a chaotic and thrilling spectacle for the fans," he added.
But here's where it gets controversial... The engines, still 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, have undergone a significant change. One of the two electrical motors that recovered energy has been removed, but the total electrical energy has tripled. This means the battery size remains similar, but a full depletion results in a dramatic 350kw (470bhp) loss, leading to potential speed differentials.
Drivers will have to carefully manage their energy usage, even on qualifying laps, backing off towards the end of straights and being strategic with throttle application.
The cars themselves are smaller, lighter, and have less downforce. They also feature 'active aerodynamics', with front and rear wings opening on straights to increase speed and energy recovery potential.
Norris describes the new car as "more powerful and quicker" on the straight. However, he highlights the complexity of battery management as the biggest challenge.
"It's not as straightforward as it sounds. You have this incredibly powerful battery with limited longevity, and you need to know when and how to use it effectively. It's about finding the right balance of energy and power usage throughout the lap."
The introduction of turbo lag, a feature not commonly seen in F1 before, adds another layer of complexity.
"In an ideal world, I'd prefer a simpler race car, but this is F1. We embrace these unique challenges," Norris said.
His teammate, Oscar Piastri, shares a similar sentiment, stating that the cars, while different, haven't lost their identity.
"There are some adjustments to get used to, but most of our initial fears have been put to rest. These cars are still the fastest in the world, and I think fans will love the changes," he added.
Norris's success in 2025, winning his first title in a close battle with Piastri and Max Verstappen, was a result of consistent improvement throughout the season.
"I'm always pushing for self-improvement. I know I'm not at the pinnacle yet, but I'm getting there. When you're competing against the best, you have to be close to perfect. I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm in a good place," he said.

"I never give up. I keep pushing and learning. That's the beauty of racing - there's always room for improvement."
