DAF XD Electric Trucks: 33 Vehicles for Contargo's Green Fleet (2026)

In a significant move towards sustainable logistics, DAF Trucks has delivered 33 XD Electric trucks to Contargo, marking one of the largest simultaneous handovers of battery-electric vehicles in Germany. This milestone continues the partnership that began in 2019 when Contargo first integrated two electric trucks from the DAF CF series into its operations. Building on the success of that initial venture, this latest delivery represents a crucial step forward in their ongoing collaboration.

The XD Electric trucks are designed for a variety of transport needs, including urban, regional, and long-haul distribution. This model is part of DAF’s innovative range of battery-electric trucks, which also includes the XF Electric, the newly launched XG and XG+ Electric models, as well as the smaller XB Electric, available in 12-, 16-, and 19-ton variants. However, it's worth noting that DAF's earlier electric models, such as the three-axle CF Electric and the two-axle LF Electric, are no longer in production, signaling a clear shift towards more advanced technologies.

Transitioning to this new generation of battery-electric trucks was not without its challenges. Despite the unveiling of the XD and XF Electric at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover in 2022, DAF faced numerous production delays at their Eindhoven facility. It wasn't until late 2025 that they finally began manufacturing these trucks, following two and a half years of setbacks. The company opted for a methodical approach, prioritizing quality over speed. This commitment to excellence was recently recognized with the 'Truck of the Year 2026' award for both the XD Electric and the XF Electric, highlighting the advancements made in electric truck technology.

The specifications of the XD Electric trucks provided to Contargo include a Sleeper High Cab with a spacious capacity of 9.53 cubic meters. These trucks are equipped with a 4×2 axle configuration, a powerful 350 kW powertrain, and five lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, totaling an impressive capacity of 525 kWh. This setup is tailored to meet Contargo's operational needs and is expected to deliver a range exceeding 500 kilometers on a single charge, with a DC fast-charging capability of 325 kW.

Contargo plans to deploy these electric trucks across 15 locations in Germany, primarily focusing on short-haul container transport. With the addition of these 33 trucks, Contargo now operates a total of 90 electric vehicles, successfully completing all e-truck projects funded through the German KsNI program, even as efforts to expand charging infrastructure continue.

Founded in 2004 by the Rhenus Group, Contargo has consolidated several companies specializing in container logistics. Their operations span Germany and extend into neighboring countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland, and Switzerland. The company has been strategically preparing for the electrification of its fleet and had previously secured funding for battery-electric trucks, although the scheme was abruptly canceled in early 2024 due to budget constraints.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Contargo is simultaneously developing one of Germany's largest private fast-charging networks, with 90 charging points established across 15 locations. Kristin Kahl, Managing Director of Contargo Truck Fleet, stated, "The presence of 90 battery-electric trucks is not a coincidence but rather the outcome of a deliberate strategy toward reliable electrification. Our transformation demonstrates that existing technologies can be effectively utilized and scaled in practical settings."

Christoph Fitz, Managing Director of DAF Trucks Deutschland, expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing collaboration, stating, "We are thrilled that Contargo continues the journey we started seven years ago, integrating our new line of electric trucks into their fleet in this next phase. This partnership emphasizes the importance of long-term relationships in successfully launching electric trucks. Together, we are committed to advancing this path."

This development raises important questions about the future of electric logistics: How will the industry balance technological advancements with operational demands? Are other logistics companies ready to follow suit in making similar commitments? We invite you to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
