He claims to have identified an 'anti-tail' facing the sun, comprised of a swarm of objects, which challenges our understanding of comets.

In a recent blog post, Loeb describes how images of ATLAS post-perihelion reveal a teardrop-shaped coma, a halo of gas and dust, pointing towards the sun. He theorizes that if 3I/ATLAS is accompanied by objects with different acceleration properties, they would appear closer to the sun, creating an intriguing displacement.

The 'Anti-Tail' Enigma: A Controversial Interpretation

Loeb's theory suggests that these objects, due to their non-gravitational acceleration, would be displaced from 3I/ATLAS, creating the appearance of an 'anti-tail'. He calculates that at the current distance of 270 million kilometers, this displacement is comparable to the sunward elongation of the teardrop glow.

Furthermore, Loeb proposes that this cosmic entourage, despite potentially having a fraction of the comet's mass, would have a significantly larger surface area, creating a distinctive glow around 3I/ATLAS.

Natural or Artificial? The Question Remains

The nature of these objects remains a mystery. Loeb asks, "If the anti-tail is indeed associated with a swarm, what are these objects? Are they rocky fragments, or something entirely different?"

In an earlier postulation, Loeb suggested that the anti-tail could indicate a technological origin, with the comet potentially emitting a light beam to clear its path of tiny meteors. However, NASA maintains its official position that 3I/ATLAS is a comet from an unknown star system.

A Familiar Stranger: 3I/ATLAS and Our Solar System

Despite its interstellar origins, 3I/ATLAS shares surprising similarities with objects in our solar system. Researchers have found evidence of cryovolcanoes, or 'ice volcanoes', erupting on its surface during its approach to the sun. These findings suggest a resemblance to trans-Neptunian objects, dwarf planets, and other bodies beyond Neptune.

Josep Trigo-Rodríguez, a leading researcher, expressed surprise, stating, "Being a comet formed in a remote planetary system, it is remarkable that its surface materials resemble those of trans-Neptunian objects in our own solar system."
