Christian Horner’s £600m Alpine F1 Return: Advanced Negotiations & What It Means for Formula 1 (2026)

Breaking News in the F1 world! Just months after his departure from Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner might be gearing up for a sensational comeback. Could he be making a splash with Alpine? Let's dive in!

With the new Formula 1 cars being finalized ahead of a closed-door test in Barcelona, the pressure is on. Team principals are under scrutiny, with Ferrari's Fred Vasseur already feeling the heat after a challenging 2025 season.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could Horner really collaborate with Renault?

Alpine, fresh from finishing at the bottom of the constructors’ championship and ditching their Renault engines for Mercedes in 2026, is reportedly in advanced talks with Horner. Journalist Pedro Fermin Flores suggests a potential partnership could be mutually beneficial.

Flores reports that Horner is in 'advanced negotiations' to acquire a stake in Alpine. It's widely believed that Horner would only return to F1 if he could have an ownership stake, not just a team principal role.

Horner is unlikely to work with Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s current chief advisor, despite their positive relationship. The talks have been ongoing for months, with Horner aiming for a significant operational role.

And this is the part most people miss... The 52-year-old is leading a group of investors aiming to buy a 24% stake in Alpine, currently held by Otro Capital. This would put him on par with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

Flores suggests Horner's investor group could bring in over £600 million, giving him significant influence in the team's management and strategic decisions. While no formal agreement is in place, the mutual interest is clear.

Alpine's interest in Horner is understandable, given his success at Red Bull since their takeover of Jaguar in 2005.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the championship, the value of Alpine is still high due to F1's rapid growth. Minority owners are reportedly ready to sell, which could speed up negotiations.

Here's a thought-provoking question: Whether Renault, Alpine's majority owners, want Horner's input is another matter. Horner would likely want a hands-on role, raising questions about the future of current team principal Steve Nielsen.

Also, some Red Bull staff have a Horner clause in their contracts, potentially making them targets for Alpine.
