Baker, who previously worked virtual miracles as Missouri's defensive coordinator, is reportedly in line to continue in that role under incoming LSU head coach Lane Kiffin. Sources tell FootballScoop that Kiffin has already expressed his desire for Baker to stay on board. But here's where it gets interesting...
Despite the LSU offense's struggles – finishing 104th nationally in scoring with less than 23 points per game – Baker's defense still managed to shine. In 2025, they ranked 16th in scoring defense, allowing just 18.45 points per game, and 23rd overall, giving up 313 yards per game. This is a testament to Baker's skill and the effectiveness of his defensive system.
Baker's success isn't limited to LSU. While at Missouri, under coach Eli Drinkwitz, he helped the team win 18 games in just two seasons. This included a stunning 14-3 upset victory over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. And this is the part most people miss... That game marked the first time in nearly a decade – since 2016 – that Ohio State was held without a touchdown.
Kiffin is bringing Charlie Weis Jr. to run the Tigers' offense. Baker, who is signed through the end of the 2026 season, is among the highest-paid coordinators in college football. With his strong performance record and deep ties to New Orleans, Baker is also expected to be a candidate to replace departing Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall.
