Imagine receiving a piece of your history, a tangible reminder of dreams chased and battles fought. That's exactly what happened to MotoGP star Aleix Espargaro! He recently received a truly special gift: the fairing from the 2010 Ducati Desmosedici he piloted for the Pramac team during his first full season in the premier class.
This wasn't just any gift; it was a powerful symbol of Espargaro's journey in MotoGP, a journey that began unexpectedly. In 2009, the then-relatively unknown Spaniard got his big break with the Pramac squad, stepping in for Mika Kallio at the Indianapolis and San Marino Grands Prix. Kallio, in turn, had been promoted to the factory Ducati team to fill the void left by the injured Casey Stoner. Espargaro seized the opportunity, finishing a respectable 13th and 11th in those initial races.
He further proved his mettle by returning for the Malaysian and Valencia races later that year, replacing Niccolo Canepa. This performance earned him a full-time ride with Pramac in 2010. While he achieved a best result of eighth place twice that season, the following year saw him back in Moto2. But his ambition burned bright, and he returned to MotoGP in 2012 with the Aspar team, riding a CRT-spec Aprilia.
But here's where it gets interesting... Espargaro's story is one of perseverance. He didn't immediately find himself on a championship-contending bike. He fought his way up, honing his skills and proving his worth.
Over the weekend, Espargaro shared his joy on social media, revealing that Raul Romero, the former owner of Esponsorama Racing (also known as Avintia), had presented him with the precious fairing. This piece of racing history will find a place of honor in Espargaro's personal museum, alongside other bikes and memorabilia from his illustrious career. It's worth noting that Espargaro had previously raced for Romero's team in the 125cc and 250cc categories, highlighting the strong bond between them. Esponsorama Racing, a team with a long history in the sport, ultimately withdrew from MotoGP at the end of the 2021 season.
Before his transformative stint with Aprilia, Espargaro spent two years with Aspar in MotoGP (2012-2013) and then moved to Forward Yamaha, where he secured his first podium finish at the Aragon Grand Prix. He also played a crucial role in Suzuki's return to MotoGP in 2015 and 2016.
And this is the part most people miss... It was his move to Aprilia in 2017 that truly cemented Espargaro's legacy. He was instrumental in transforming Aprilia from an underdog into a race-winning force. In 2022, he achieved his and the brand's first-ever MotoGP victory, a moment of pure elation. He added two more victories to his tally in 2023 before retiring from MotoGP at the end of the 2024 season.
Even in retirement, Espargaro's passion for racing remains undiminished. He signed with Honda as an official test rider and even made five Grand Prix appearances in 2025, demonstrating his continued dedication to the sport.
This gift of the Ducati fairing is more than just a sentimental gesture; it's a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and unwavering spirit that define Aleix Espargaro's remarkable MotoGP career.
But here's a thought: Do you think riders should hold onto more pieces of their racing history? Should teams be more proactive in preserving these artifacts for both the riders and the fans?
