A Double Standard in AFL: Will Ashcroft's Origin Eligibility Controversy
An AFL star's frustration over inconsistent rules has sparked a debate.
Will Ashcroft, a dual Norm Smith medallist and Brisbane Lions standout, has expressed his anger over being deemed ineligible for the 2026 State of Origin match. The decision, which goes against the AFL's own selection criteria, has left Ashcroft and his team perplexed.
Ashcroft's journey began in Queensland, but at 14, he moved to Victoria, a move that would later impact his Origin eligibility. With a strong connection to Victoria, having played and captained for various Victorian teams, Ashcroft was drafted out of St Kilda City and the Sandringham Dragons. According to the AFL's rules, a player's eligibility is determined by the state of their junior club, not their birthplace.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Despite these clear guidelines, Ashcroft was informed that he wouldn't be representing Victoria in the upcoming exhibition match against Western Australia. This decision contrasts sharply with the special permission granted to Kysaiah Pickett, who, despite being raised in both WA and South Australia, was allowed to play for the Origin game due to his draft club.
Ashcroft's disappointment is palpable. In an interview, he shared his feelings, stating, "I consider myself a Victorian. I've been part of this state's teams since I was 14. It's unfortunate that I'm now deemed ineligible. I'm pretty angry about it."
And this is the part most people miss...
Ashcroft's exclusion is particularly surprising given his recent success. He's coming off back-to-back Norm Smith Medal performances, a testament to his skill and dedication. With 58 AFL games under his belt since joining Brisbane, Ashcroft has established himself as a rising star.
While Ashcroft won't be suiting up for Victoria, his teammate Hugh McCluggage will represent the state, joined by ex-Lions Callum Ah Chee and Brandon Starcevich, who will reunite with Charlie Cameron for WA.
So, what do you think? Are the AFL's eligibility rules fair, or do they need a rethink? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We'd love to hear your take on this controversial decision.
