A century from Adam Rossington has ignited Pokhara Avengers' Nepal Premier League (NPL) play-off dreams, but it's a different story for Karnali Yaks, who are now out of the tournament. The battle for a play-off spot is heating up, and this match had it all!
In a thrilling encounter, Rossington's unbeaten 108 off just 58 balls, including 11 fours and seven mighty sixes, propelled Pokhara to a dominant total of 201-2. This was a remarkable achievement, as only two other teams have crossed the 200-run mark in the league's history. And to think, this was Rossington's very first NPL century!
But here's where it gets controversial... Pokhara's captain, Kushal Bhurtel, fell early, leaving the team in a slight wobble. However, Rossington's dominance and a solid partnership with Jason Roy, who scored a quickfire 46, steadied the ship. The pair's 127-run stand off just 72 deliveries was a masterclass in power-hitting. And let's not forget Dhananjaya Lakshan's unbeaten 23 off 11 balls, adding the final flourish to their innings.
Karnali, in reply, were always playing catch-up. Despite Mark Watt's attacking half-century, they could only manage 167 in 19 overs. Priyank Panchal, Jaykishan Kolsawala, and Pawan Sarraf all made starts, but couldn't convert them into big scores. Najibullah Zadran kept the hope alive for a while, but the wickets tumbled regularly, and Karnali fell well short of the target.
And this is the part most people miss... Gulshan Jha, Dipendra Sawat, Sompal Kami, Unish Singh Thakuri, and Bipin Sharma all departed cheaply, highlighting the pressure of the situation. For Pokhara, Rishi Dhawan and Dhananjaya Lakshan were the standout bowlers, claiming three wickets each.
The defeat confirmed Karnali's elimination from the play-off race, a disappointing result for a team that finished third last season. They've now won just one out of six matches, with five losses.
